Quaker Valley Council of Governments organizes a joint purchasing arrangement for solid waste collection and curbside recycling. Currently, services are provided by Waste Management. Levels of service vary by municipality, including schedule of collection and materials collected. Citizens should contact their municipality for details of their solid waste program.
New 5-Year Waste and Recycling Agreement
Throughout 2021 and with the assistance of Nestor Resources and the Waste & Recycling Committee, the QVCOG worked towards building an innovative bid specification for a new 5-year waste and recycling contract. A total of 11 QVCOG member communities moved forward in seeking a joint bid to select an appropriate package of services for their residents. After receiving two bid proposals the QVCOG Board of Directors ultimately recommended that participating communities award their Waste & Recycling Service to Waste Management through 2022-2026 citing the significant cost gap between the two options. The updated contract specifications included many new facets including a Contract Deposit Fund which will be used moving forward to hold Waste Management financially accountable to the approved service specifications. The joint bidding process saved participating member communities time and resources and helped provide a more competitive price point for refuse service. The QVCOG has approved a waste & recycling service reporting policy which seeks to establish clear channels of communication ensuring a high level of service for all participants.
COG-Wide Glass Recycling
The QVCOG has launched a Pilot Glass Recycling Program for our fifteen member communities. The site opened on Saturday, March 12, 2022 and is located at Sewickley Borough's Riverfront Park (300 Chadwick St, Sewickley, PA 15143). Users are invited to use the site free of charge. The QVCOG anticipates that this Pilot Program will last approximately 3 months to evaluate the viability of the program. This Pilot Program is being funded through the QVCOG's joint recycling fund. At the Pilot Program's conclusion the QVCOG will evaluate the feasibility of establishing a second location (to be determined) as well as a shared cost structure based on each participating municipality's population. The Rules and Regulations for the program can be found below:
